Tips For Safe Driving This Holiday Season
‘Tis the season for traveling! Whether it be for Thanksgiving, Christmas or New Year’s, there is a good chance that you will be driving somewhere over the next month. Wherever you are going, it’s important to be prepared for the road (pun intended) ahead. Continue reading for a few tips for safe driving this holiday season!
Plan Ahead!
When going on any trip, whether it be a few hours or several, make sure that your car can safely take on the extra mileage. Stop by your local mechanic or auto shop for an oil change and maintenance check-up. Once your vehicle is good to go, check the weather not only at your destination, but also along the way. If icy conditions await you, grab a windshield scraper and perhaps a few bags of sand to prevent fishtailing.
Stay Fresh & Alert At All Times
It’s important to be well rested before heading out on a long trip. Pack drinks, snacks and anything else you need to help keep you focused on the road. Take regular breaks and don’t be ashamed to let your partner drive a bit (I’m talking to you gentlemen!).
Know Your Limits
Rule of thumb when driving is to stay within 5 MPH of the speed limit during IDEAL driving conditions. Driving through Pennsylvania with 6 inches of snow on the ground is far from ideal, so mind the road and drive a safe speed. If you are inexperienced with snow, sleet and ice on the road, proceed with extra caution.
Avoid Distractions
Put your cell phone away and focus on the task at hand: getting to your destination as safely as possible. Sending a text takes your eyes off the road, which needs your attention when driving conditions are not 100%.
