Windshield Care and Proper Maintenance

Congratulations on your new auto glass! While you probably don’t want to think about another replacement anytime soon, it’s extremely important that you care for your replacement windshield properly. With a new windshield, there are a few things to avoid and steps to take to keep your windshield in good condition. Below, find a few of our handy windshield care and proper maintenance tips!

Immediately After Replacement

Your newly replaced windshield is most vulnerable during the first 48 hours after installation, which is why it’s important to protect your glass properly. Here’s some tips to help you care for your windsheild:

Let Your Vehicle Sit

To help your windshield fully cure, avoid driving for at least a few hour after you return home from the shop. Urethane won’t cure fully for several hours, so if you can, avoid driving your vehicle until the next day.

Don’t Slam The Doors

Don’t slam your doors after your windshield replacement. Slamming your doors creates pressure changes within the vehicle, which can compromise the adhesive as it cures. Avoid slamming your doors for several hours after replacement to keep everything glued down.

Leave The Tape For Now

After installation, leave the adhesive tape around the edges of your new windshield for 24-48 hours before removing. This is to ensure that the adhesive has cured properly, protecting the newly sealed area from dust and other debris. After the curing period has passed, remove the tape to expose a new car windshield!

Don’t Get It Wet

Please note that it is best for your windshield’s seal and molding to avoid the intense water pressure of a high-pressure car wash for at least 48 hours after installation. This is to ensure that the adhesive is completely dry before getting it wet, which may interfere with the adhesive’s processing. If you must, you can hand wash your car before the 48-hour time period has passed.

Ongoing Windshield Maintenance

To protect your windshield, be diligent about ongoing auto glass maintenance. Here are some tips to help keep your new windshield looking great no matter how long you keep it!

Keep Them Clean

To keep your auto glass clean, we recommend using a dedicated auto glass cleaner. This helps to avoid smudges and debris that can obstruct your vision, as well as dead bugs that can cause gradual deterioration over time due to their high acidity.

Be Mindful of Windshield Wipers

If you let your windshield wipers deteriorate, they’ll scratch the glass. Don’t risk damaging your vehicle and install new wiper blades as necessary.

Repair Minor Damages

If you find a minor rock chip or crack in your windshield, it’s important to have it repaired before it grows and becomes a larger problem. You can avoid another windshield replacement by having the damage repaired as soon as possible.
